Friday 21st of March Week 4

Summary of the Tutorial Week 4- Using the WWW
The task of our lab today was to view 2 specific websites and to discuss their authenticity a partner. In our tutorial the class had to log how these specific websites have attempted to appear authentic and to list 4 clues that gives each site away as a spoof ( i.e. a website designed not to be taken so seriously).
Four clues:

1. This website is valid as it displays specific data that relates to the author/information provider.

2. The URL of this website, is com= commerical organisation, therefore this indicates the website is also valid.

3. The author is supplying real and relaible information. The information verifiable as it is dependable and erorr-free.

4. Lastly the website overall is organised and constructed well

2nd Webiste-http://www.molossia.org/

Four clues:

1. The content of the website is not well-supported neither is the organization and the overall appearance.

2. The appearance of the page is not constructed well, the only feature uniquely related to html is the hyperlinks used within the text.

3. The purpose of this website does not have alot of merit. There is not much on the website to indicate purpose maybe other than educational.

4. The author is not obvioulsy stated, therefore, it could be said that the website is not valid in that way.

The second task of the day was to view a website, http://www.martinlutherking.org/ and before opening the page, we were to log our intial thoughts of the website. My first thoughts on this website was that is would possibly be about the bibliography and the life story of Martin Luther King. I expect to find general information regarding Martin Luther Kings life and his achievements also an educational overview in that case.

After viewing the web page my first impressions were why is there 'new' Rap Lyrics displayed under the illustration of Martin Luther King himself? Secondly after reviewing most of the website, it is valid to say that there is a bias evident in most of the Website and it does not give a balance of information.

http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1964/king-bio.html : here this website is more authentic and provides a specific overview of Martin Luthur King. The organization and the references given also gains to its merit.

Friday 29th of Febuary Week 1

  • Summary of the Tutorial week 1- Introduction to University Computing

  • First week was the introduction to the class tutor Gary Chan. The tutor reflected on our main goals for the semester. For the first lab session the class learnt how to access ECU website, use the ECU web enrolment, acessing our email account and learning managment systems.

  • Next our class checked if we could send and recieve emails. By doing this we had to click on the link provided under I.T. and Systems called Student E-mail and log into account.

  • The next requirment for the our class was to log into BlackBoard under the Current Students Page and to explore the current unit we are studying. We acessed the unit under UPC 0004 and reviewed Unit resources and assignment 1.

  • After completing the first tasks the class was to set up their own personal blog in the Blogger account to reflect what we had learnt in both the Tutorials and Lectures. To set up the Blog we acessed the website by going to http://www.blogger.com, and created our own account under "Create a Blog." In creating a blog we had to choose a username, password, display name, entering our email account and ticking the terms of acceptance. Step 2 was to name our blog and creating a title and confirm/choose a URL. Step 3 was to choose a template so the system could now create our blog. Step 4 we were to view our blog and check if it was working by posting.

Summary of the Lecture

Firstly our lecture was to intorduce the class to the course and provide information to the following weeks. The lecture reviewed the unit and provided a project-based approach to accessing knowledge through library and information & communications technologies. Our aim for this semester was to focus on using various resourses in accessing knowledge and focusing on our responsibilities for the semester.
